Bubba (the hippie) explains how he will build the base.

Finished wooden base on concrete blocks.

Plywood base to support the grow bed.

The 4x8 plant bed is installed.

I had Bubba and David add trim because this whole system can be seen from the kitchen - it is so close to the house and not in the back yard. I want it to look finished and not so raw because I will be seeing it all the time.

It is all coming together nicely. Tomorrow the plumbing will be installed and then we need to double wash the rocks.

This has taken 4 days so far, which is longer than I thought but there were so many variables along the way. Every system needs to be customized for each area.

Washing the rocks is supposed to be the hardest part of getting this system up and running. I am glad Bubba and David are here to help every step of the way.

Thanks guys, you so rock and you are going to rock even more when you wash the ton of rocks that need to go into the grow bed. :-)

Back to School with the Fish

I am diving into homeschooling yet again, after thinking about it for a year and a half.

I had planned on homeschooling my 12 year old daughter last year, but at the last minute I chickened out because I thought it would be too much for me.

This time it is different though.

Although I have actual chickens in my backyard because of all this urban farming I have been doing for the last six months, I am not feeling one bit "chicken" myself, especially when it comes to this homeschooling thing with my daughter who is now 13 and turning 14 in December.

Part two is the new Aquaponics system I am having built right now, with a 4 x 6 foot plant bed and a 100 gallon fish tank that will grow tilapia fish.

This system will be in a greenhouse, on my patio and the fish will literally be 3 feet from my kitchen. This is real and doable.

I believe that families can absolutely sustain themselves in urban areas using systems like these and I am putting some money where my mouth is and plunging into Aquaponics with no expectations other than maintaining the proper pH balance in the fish tank.
